I’ve never really liked the term HR. For many, it carries a negative association, the department you only meet when things go wrong.
I lost count of how many times I heard, “Careful what you say, HR are in the room.” But that’s not how I’ve ever seen it.
For me, it has always been about People and Culture. Without people, there is no business. And without culture, there’s no reason for people to stay. Look after your people, and they’ll look after you.
People & Culture as the Advantage
In my career, I’ve been fortunate to work with some incredible companies, particularly in recent years, where there was a real emphasis on culture, team building, and looking after people. The impact was undeniable: stronger engagement, better retention, and healthier business performance.
That’s why I firmly believe: Strong businesses are built on strong cultures.
Growth Isn’t Perfect and That’s Okay
Of course, no organisation gets everything right. Fast-growing companies especially face challenges: what worked for a team of 10 may no longer work at 100.
What matters is agility - the willingness to acknowledge what hasn’t worked, listen, and adapt. Scaling well isn’t about avoiding mistakes; it’s about learning and evolving.
Building the Right Foundations
This doesn’t mean bureaucracy or endless red tape. It means having solid foundations in place, policies and practices that are fair, transparent, and ready to scale with you.
You may not need them every day, but when you do, they ensure people are treated with consistency and care, even in the more difficult moments.
Why I Started tHRive
This is exactly why I founded tHRive Partnership. I wanted to help organisations balance growth with strong people foundations, to scale without losing sight of what makes them thrive.
